The diet of the working class was very bad in the 19th century, consisting of mostly bread, potatoes and strong tea. Tea provided nutrients and drinking a cup of tea was a much cheaper alternative to eating food during the day. For the middle and upper classes tea was a luxury and there were many rules about when and how it should be drunk, for the working classes however it was a necessity and the introduction of black tea from Shri Lanka meant it was easily affordable.
