Advert for Stevenson & Co, grocery store
Medium: Print on paper
At the top of this leaflet, in Evanion's handwriting, is the date "Dec 1883". Consistent with this date, the grocer is advertising his stock of raisins, currants and saltanas - vital ingredients for the traditional British Christmas pudding.
This dish originated in the 14th century in the form of a porridge. It was then a fasting dish eaten in preparation for Christmas, and was made by boiling beef, mutton, raisins, currents, plums and spices. By the 16th century the porridge had evolved into a plum cake, given more flavour by the addition of eggs, breadcrumbs and alcohol. Speciality Christmas Tea is also advertised in this store.
