With progress in the retail trades the role of the printer became ever more important and demand for his work was more than ever before. Shops advertised their commodities on posters, leaflets and trade cards and tried to make their materials as colourful and as eye catching as possible. Interest in colour printing was first aroused in the 1700s but it was not until the 19th century that a practical and inexpensive method was developed. This is a very striking leaflet for the printer ‘Henry Harrington’ and would have stood out amongst the other black and white advertisements.
