During the 19th century the printing industry changed dramatically, there was a considerable increase in the speed and output per printing press, whilst at the same time there was a reduction in the cost of printing and therefore a decrease in the final cost of printed material. More and more people in society were literate and the demand for cheap newspapers, journals and novels was unparalleled. Printers such as J. M. Powell & Son, would also have been very busy producing posters, leaflets and trade cards, advertising not only their own services but advertising all manner of merchandise from shops and theatres to food stuffs and exhibitions.
