In the Victorian era laundries often offered dyeing services. For poorer families in particular, dyeing was seen as an effective way of revamping an old garment. With dyeing came a danger that the clothing would be damaged beyond wear, but a good many people took the chance and were rewarded with beautifully coloured clothes. Towards the mid-point of the century, chemists began to create new synthetic colours, greatly expanding the traditional range of colours in clothing.
