Before the 1800s the materials used to get furniture clean was quite crude, for example polish was very often home made. Different mixtures were prepared depending on the material to be cleaned; furniture polishes were made from linseed oil and beeswax and polishes for silver or copper contained charcoal. By the 1880s general stores and grocers sold a much greater variety of pre prepared cleaning products like Florintine Liquid Gold Polish, featured on this leaflet.
