The Shepherd Rothwell & Hough company was formed in Oldham in 1872. They produced various models of this 'Eclipse' knitting machine, as well as sewing machines under the same name, which were basically simplified models of contemporaneous Singer machines. In 1878, they became one of the first companies to copyright an advertising slogan: "Eclipsing all others ..."
