Advert for the Yorkshire Coffee & Dining Rooms 6804
Medium: Print on paper
By the late-19th century many formerly popular coffee houses had been transformed into exclusive gentlemen’s clubs or public houses selling cheap food and alcohol. Even where they survived, they were no longer the crowded, noisy and vibrant meeting places of the 17th and 18th centuries.
The introduction of efficient postal and transport systems, and the increase in education available for professionals like doctors, meant that coffee houses were no longer vital centres of communication and culture.
