The tailoring of men's clothes is an old and established craft based on long traditions. It has always been the prerogative of men, attendants and assistants were male as was the fitter. Women would have been employed 'behind the scenes' in the sewing of garments but they would not have entered the tailors shop. It would have been common for the proprietor to greet his customers by name as they entered the store, however it was only the most important clients who were fitted by him.
