It is the manageress of the ‘Aerated Bread Company’ who is credited with opening the first tea shop in London. She served afternoon tea to the public in 1864. Respectable ladies did not enter coffee houses or restaurants even when they were accompanied by their husbands so for the first time tea shops were places where well bread ladies could eat and drink in public in a group without being frowned upon.
