Small Grocers shops flourished and they could be found on every other street in cities. They were often quite small shops with produce stacked high inside and were usually family run businesses. Grocer’s stores in the 19th century sold almost everything that a customer could ever need or want from sweets, chocolate and tobacco to paraffin, furniture polish, tea and tinned foods. This leaflet is advertising the sale of hampers; these are traditional presents at Christmas and contain luxury items like wine, pickles and pâté. These were foods not eaten in the everyday diet and so hampers were very exciting presents.
