The Temperance Movement was a national Christian association that advocated drinking tea as a healthy alternative to alcohol. The movement was extremely popular in the 19th century and to some extent fuelled the nationwide spread of stores such as this one, which sold a wide variety of teas. By 1871 the annual consumption of tea was 4lbs (nearly two kilograms) per person.
