This is an advert for the Bennet Brothers Chrismas Fair. Many of the Christmas traditions that we participate in today were started by the Victorians, decorating trees, having holidays from work and pulling crackers are just some examples. The custom of sending Christmas cards also started in this period, John Callcott Horsley a painter and Royal Academician designed the first card at the request of Henry Cole who was director of the Victoria and Albert Museum. 100 cards were produced are were sold for 1 shilling each. The idea caught on and soon everyone was sending their Christmas greetings to friends and families in beautifully decorated cards.
