Coffee houses and stalls first appeared in Britain in the 17th century. They were fashionable rather than popular at the time, and also deeply controversial to some. Indeed, coffee shops were the spur behind the Women’s Petition Against Coffee, a nationwide movement that complained men were spending more time drinking coffee than they were with their families. By the 19th century, coffee was readily available in cafes and dining rooms such as this.
