During the 1860s, England was struck by a disastrous cattle plague that killed many herds of cattle outright. London was at this time home to hundreds of dairies and was badly hit by the epidemic, which left the city with few cows that could produce milk of good quality. Fortunately, recent developments in the railways throughout Britain meant that milk could be transported from rural areas to cities before it soured. 'Pure Country Milk', as advertised here, was popular as a result.
