The 19th century was a time of innovation and invention and many scientists were working to develop engines to power industrial machinery. This is an advertisement for Hodson’s rotary engine. It was James Watts, working in the late 1700s who is credited with developing the first steam rotary engine. Initially his design used an up and down pumping action and was used for draining mines. Later he developed an engine that worked both the forward and backward movement of the piston and this was much more efficient and could be used to power many different types of machinery.
