Advert for the Russian Charcoal Cooking Stove
Medium: Print on paper
19th century Britain saw the development of the modern professional and clerical classes, and a decisive shift towards a therapeutic or leisure-based economy and culture. Working hours in general decreased, bank holidays were introduced, and holiday periods on the whole got longer. The development of the railways also made travel much less expensive, and this started a trend among city dwellers for picnics and excursions in rural areas. A charcoal stove such as the one advertised here would have been extremely useful for vacationers: it could be taken anywhere and hot food could be prepared with relative ease.
