As unbelievable as it sounds the tin opener wasn't invented until more than 40 years after the tin. Tin cans were developed in the early 1780s as a way of preserving food and making it easy to transport and supply to soldiers and sailors in the army and navy. The only problem with these tins was that they were difficult to open, early methods were very dangerous, like for example using a hammer and chisel! Owning a tin opener would have been like owning the very latest, time saving gadget.
