The 1800s provided an exceptionally stimulating atmosphere for those interested in science, engineering and invention. Victorian society as a whole loved gadgets and would use them in every aspect of their everyday life - ostensibly to save time and energy, but very often to display their wealth and taste. The device featured on this leaflet could be used to insert or remove tacks in upholstery, walls and furnishings. The advert states that the tool could be "used by ladies with perfect ease". This suggests that women were an early market for DIY in the home.
