Advert For B. M.Tite & Son, Coal & Coke Merchants
Medium: Print on paper
Coal was the main fuel in the 19th Century, used for domestic heating and lighting as well as for powering machinery in factories and trains and ships. It was cheap and could be delivered to the door by companies like Tite & Son, featured in this advert. Substantial houses had fireplaces in every room and it was the servants job to get up very early every morning and to start a fire in the rooms which were most frequently used. To have a fire in the bedroom was considered a luxury and it was only kitchens that had fires burning all day long.
