Fining was a process used to filter impurities from beer prior to its marketing and consumption. The beer was allowed to settle and then mixed with isinglass or another gelatine substance. Cloudy particles left in the beer from the fermenting process stuck to the isinglass, leaving the remaining liquid clear and translucent.
