This is an advertisement for H. W. Garrad’s knife cleaning and polishing machine. Before stainless steel was developed knives and forks rusted and stained very easily and had to be cleaned regularly to keep them bright and shiny. Rotary knife cleaning machines were introduced in the late 19th century to make this job much easier, they were simple to use and efficient because several knives could be cleaned at the same time. The knives were washed with soapy water and then inserted into the circular drum of the knife cleaner, inside was a smaller wheel covered in leather pads that was turned by an external handle. As the handle was turned the wheel rotated and the leather the pads rubbed the knives, cleaning and polishing them.
