The piano and pianoforte became very popular in the 19th century. They were extremely versatile instruments, for the first time musicians could produce music with a wide range of tone as well as volume. Initially the preserve of the middle classes, with the introduction of hire purchase even some of the working classes could afford to purchase one. Etiquette guides recommended that girls learn to play the piano for the emotional, moral and physical benefits of practising for many hours. Learning to play the piano was seen as a productive way for women of the leisured classes to fill their time.
