The 1850s in Britain were marked by a number of serious cholera outbreaks in major industrial cities, notably London, Manchester and Glasgow. Most of these epidemics were eventually traced to a contaminated water supplies: sometimes an individual public well or water pump, at other times to general industrial pollution in rivers. The following decades saw the wholesale overhaul of Britain's municipal sewer systems, particularly in London. Water filters such as this one reassured homeowners that their water was clean and pure.
