‘Amer Picon’, the beverage featured on this leaflet, is a bitter French cordial, it is orange flavoured and is made from quinine, spices, cinchona bark, oranges, and gentiam. It was a popular drink in the 19th century because it was cheap and could be mixed with water or beer to create a delicious drink. It was first created in 1837 by Frenchman Gaetan Picon, who was at the time living in Belgium, he returned to France and started mass producing the beverage. It has become popular around the world.
