Although other methods of reproduction were available, wood remained the most popular medium for illustration for most of the 19th century. It was relatively inexpensive, and allied to high speed presses and cheaper paper, it became possible to produce large runs of pictures to a wide audience for the first time. The images could be very detailed and the the late-19th century trend for pictorial journalism developed directly from the popularity of woodblock engraving.
