Joseph Crosfield established a soap works at Bank Quey in Warrington in 1814. It was an ideal place to start the business as salt could obtained from Cheshire and coal from St Helens, both of which were essential for soap production, and the additional benefit of the River Mersey running near by meant that materials could be easily transported and the business flourished. It was a successful family business for almost 100 years and then in 1911 Brunner, Mond and Co purchased the company. Lever Brothers acquired Crosfield in 1929, and it is now a subsidiary of Unilever.
