Cleanliness was very important to those living in the Victorian era, in fact it was even said that ‘Cleanliness was next to Godliness.’ It was actually very difficult to keep the home clean at this time, streets were unpaved and so shoes were covered with dirt and the air was very dusty. Horse drawn carriages made this problem worse as did the coal fires that burned in almost every home. Housewives and maid’s would have used disinfectants like Chadwick’s Hygenic Crystals everyday to ensure that their houses stayed clean.
