After the penny post was introduced in 1840 writing letters became very popular and greetings cards were sent for just 1 penny all over the country. Envelopes were introduced in the 1840s and before this time people would fold their sheet of paper write the address on one side and seal it with wax. Initially they were plain white and were sold ungummed by the post office but there was a demand for better quality envelopes available in more interesting colours. Stationery stores like the one advertised on this leaflet would have sold a variety of differently coloured paper, envelopes, stamps as well as string, ribbon and many other useful accessories.
