Originally tea was bought from China but the British went to great lengths to develop plantations within the Empire, especially in India, Ceylon (as Sri Lanka was then called), Kenya and Malaya. Perfect growing conditions for tea are a cool climate, sunshine and light rain. Whole mountainsides were carved into terraces for planting bushes. The East India Tea Company had the monopoly on importing tea for over 100 years but in 1833 the trade was opened up to other merchants and prices became more competitive.
