Large ironmonger’s stores not only sold metal household wares but also sold new and second hand furniture. The Ironmongers themselves knew about plumbing and carpentry and were generally able to offer advice and suggest a solution for all kinds of problems. During the 19th century department stores were opened that sold a large range of goods, from clothing and food to furniture and household goods. Initially these larger stores were not a threat to Ironmonger’s stores because they were based in cities. The Ironmongers store remained a unshakeable fixture in towns and villages until the 1970s.
