In the 19th century the growth of business meant that there was a large rise in the number of clerical jobs available in cities all around the country. Clerks and those working in offices were considered middle class because some level of education was required to do the work and because they did not have to perform manual labour. However often the wages of the office worker were lower than those of a skilled labourer. Newly developed technology, such as the typewriter featured on this leaflet, made office workers jobs much easier and faster.
