Coal gas was introduced as a means of heating irons at the end of the 19th century. Some were heated by a burner inside the body of the iron was supplied by a flexible tube, however these produced gases that could be inhaled by the laundress and a more popular design was a burner incorporated into a stand with an iron that fitted over the top.
