Advert for WJ Harris & Co, Bassinettes & sewing machines
Medium: Print on paper
Before the invention of the sewing machine all stitching had to be done by hand. This could be a lengthy and laborious task: a full dress could take up to three days' stictching, and the women in textiles factories often worked for many hours for very little pay. The invention of the sewing machine transformed both industrial and domestic clothing production.
