Advert For Jas. Saunders & Co. Whiskies
Printer: McCorquodale & Co
Medium: Print on paper
The earliest recorded reference to whiskey appears in 1494. Although popular in Ireland and Scotland whiskey was practically unheard of to English drinkers before the 1840s. Drinking tastes changed during the 19th century from a preference to heavy ports and wines to lighter drinks such as claret and a blended whiskey. This was largely because smaller meals were eaten at the end of the day and lighter drinks were required.
