This advertisement is for George Trotman, Grocer and Tea Dealer. Grocer’s stores stocked a range of goods from staple food stuffs like milk, butter, sugar, flour and bread to more luxurious produce such as fruit, tinned food and confectionery. The illustration featured on the leaflet is depicting a scene from Charles Dickens’ Pickwick Papers, it is showing Tony Weller getting his revenge upon the hypocritical Reverend Mr Stiggins by dunking him in a horse trough. Using scenes from fashionable and popular novels was the 19th century equivalent of using a photograph of a celebrity.
