This is an advertisement for Barrett and Elers screw stopped bottles. Glass bottles have been used as containers for thousands of years; glass was strong yet cheap and easy to make and if the bottles were sealed properly the liquids contained inside stayed fresh for long periods. The demand for glass bottles grew as manufacturers started producing soft drinks like lemonade and ginger beer and began to produce alcohol like stout and bitter in glass bottles. In 1858 screw top jars and bottles were introduced and these helped to retain the bubbles in the soft drinks.
