The 19th century was a period of technological development and Victorians were known for their love of gadgets and time saving devices. An object like Aunt Iza’s Princess Tray would have been very popular and is in fact advertised as ‘The Handiest Domestic Article ever Offered to the Public’. The illustration depicts a maid taking the cutlery and crockery to or from the dinner table. Interestingly the patentee is Elizabeth Saunders, a woman. More women were educated in the Victorian period than ever before and new opportunities were open to them such as becoming doctors, teachers and inventors.
