Medicines sold in the 19th Century offered cures for every ill from asthma to heart disease and exploited sufferers, many of whom had little money and had to pawn possessions or work long hours to afford small bottles of medicine. Remedies like Dough’s Cough Medicine were available from chemists shops and from hawkers and often seemed effective because they contained powerful substances like opium.
