Advert for Smithson's Chemists Shop
Medium: Print on paper
The early years of the Victorian era were blighted by outbreaks of infectious diseases; but they were also a time of unprecedented research in chemistry and growth in the pharmaceutical industry. The Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain was founded in 1841, obliging all chemists to put themselves on a national register.
The windows of Victorian chemists, such as this one, were brightly coloured with distinctive bottles containing a variety of available drugs.
