Advert for Seigel's Medicine
Medium: Print on paper
One of the main beneficiaries of the rise of Victorian printing and publishing was the pharmaceutical industry. There were countless posters and leaflets, as well as advertisements in periodicals and newspapers, promoting the health restoring benefits of particular remedies. While chemists shops and pharmacists were now on a central register, and to some extent under government control, drug manufacturers were under no such strictures, hence the widespread popularity of non-prescription remedies such as this. Mrs Seigel's Operating Pills claimed to help cure constipation and "sluggish" livers, and would have been sold in pharmacies alongside prescription medicines.
