In the later years of the 19th century there was a great rise in the number of people working in clerical positions, which did not require heavy manual work. Initially clerical workers were all male, because men were thought to have better mathematical skills and the general office environment was seen as too demanding for women. Wider and better education for women changed this somewhat, and by the 1880s more women were employed in office jobs, very often on lower wages than their male counterparts. The growth in the service and office industries contributed to the establishment and success of stores such as this one.
