Advert For James Foster's Victoria Knitting Machine
Printer: Lehmann, O.
Medium: Print on paper
This is the reverse of the leaflet.
This leaflet is advertising James Foster’s Victoria sewing machine. Surprisingly sewing machines were not new inventions in the 19th century, the first machine had been developed in 1589 by the Reverend William Lee who wanted to make hosiery. Hand knitting continued for a long time however and it was not until the 18th century that the craft of knitting was taken over by a guild organised cottage industry. Knitting machines developed in the 18th and 19th centuries had mechanisms based on Lee’s machine and even William Cotton’s machine invented in 1864 that became the model for all future machines, had Lee’s bearded spring needle.
