Advert For Herman Stibbe, Foreign Liqueurs, Bitters & Spirits
Medium: Print on paper
This is an advertisement for Herman Stibbe, alcohol seller. During the 19th century alcoholic tastes changed dramatically. At the start of the period drinks were at their strongest and fullest flavoured but gradually as the century progressed the trend veered towards lighter drinks, both in terms of colour and strength. People began to travel for leisure in this period and their experiences with food and drink abroad broadened their tastes. The habit of drinking heavy port throughout the evening meal was replaced with the idea of drinking different wines according to the different dishes on the menu. It was at this time that the idea developed that wine should not be served with cheese.
