This is an advertisement for Kinnears’ shadowless and frameless billiard table lamp shade. Billiards has been played since the 15th century, the game originated in France as an indoor version of a lawn game similar to croquet (hence the green of the table covering). Playing billiards became very popular in the 19th century and Queen Victorian even installed a table in Windsor Castle in 1838. It became traditional for tables to be lit from above by 3 lamps suspended from the ceiling thus ensuring that no corner of the table was in shadow.
