The first coffee house in Britain was opened in Oxford in 1650 by a Jewish Turk named Jacob. Many more coffee houses followed in cities all over the country, but they were especially popular in London. By the 19th century they had developed from lively and noisy café’s selling cheap beverages into select establishments that were the forerunners of gentlemen’s clubs.
