Advert for Ye Olde Stationers Shoppe
Medium: Print on paper
As well as stocks of playing cards this leaflet advertises the sale of Christmas and New Year cards. Sending seasonal greetings cards was a familiar idea by the end of the 19th century: many businesses, in particular, sent cards to their customers wishing them a happy new year. The custom of sending cards at Christmas was a new one, however.
From the point of view of consumers, the growing popularity of greeting cards stemmed from the introduction of the penny post in 1840. From the point of view of manufacturers and stationers, new technologies for the printing of paper had made card production much faster and cheaper.
