Oil lamps were developed during the mid 19th century and with the introduction of paraffin in 1878, oil became more affordable so more people were able to purchase lamps. Made from petroleum, paraffin was the ideal fuel as it was much lighter and not sticky so that the oil could easily be drawn up from a simple reservoir below the lamp. The light produced by paraffin lamps was a diffused light and so lamps that could be placed on tables next to desks or comfortable chairs became very popular.
