Lighting, heating, cooking and heating water took up a large part of the daily routine for Victorian housewives and servants. By the end of the 1800s gas and electricity had been introduced, but electricity in particular was the preserve of the very wealthy. Gas was originally introduced in working and middle class homes for cooking; it was not used for lighting until much later.
