While pocket watches were relatively common in the second half of the 19th century - a time when they had begun to be mass produced - wrist watches were rare. Invented by Patek Philippe in 1868, the first wrist watches were very fragile. Any knock or sudden movement would damage the internal mechanism. They were also considered very effeminate, and so were not immediately popular.
